Margie and family, The Gatens Family's heart felt condolences, to your entire family, on the passing of one of the true icons of the cattle business in our great state of Iowa. John Joe was such a special man to the Don Gatens family. Dad and John Joe were actually partners in both of their loves, the cattle brokerage business. They were never together very often however when Dad needed the best 500 - 900 weight cattle, to sell to his many customers in NE Iowa, his first call was to John Joe and we would have them soon. The time, especially time driving, that John Joe saved our Father was incredible. Dad and John Joe had the same eyes when, it came to knowing the best cattle. That being said, John Joe was so much more than a cattle icon, he was one of the finest men I have ever known. One of the best days of my life, was the day last Fall I drove to Melrose to see Margie and John Joe. I even stopped in Russell, I had to see the sale barn. Needless to say i was very impressed with that facility. Margie, John Joe and I had a great 1 hr. visit and then back to Iowa City I went. I had to drive to Melrose and thank Margie and John Joe in person, for all that they had done for the Gatens family. Also, I had to thank them for attending the 2008 Iowa State Basketball Championships Finals to watch my son's Matt"s Iowa City High team, win the championship that night. I was walking up the stairs of Wells Fargo and there were Margie & John Joe siting smiling at me. John Joe said "Don is not able to be here (he passed in 2003), we are here for him. That is one of the kindest things anyone has ever done for my family. It was nothing to people like Margie and John Joe, they have shown signs of kindness like that their entire lives.
Even though your husband, Father, Grandfather is gone, John Joe will continue to be with all of you the rest of your lives. You will feel him leading you daily through your life.
All the Gatens family's very best, to all of the Curran family. What an incredible legacy, John Joe left all of us with all of you.
Mike Gatens
