Obituary

Donald L. Sammons, age 85, of Ottumwa passed away on November, 15, 2020, at Good Samaritan Center.

He was born September 6, 1935 to Elizabeth H. (Prose) and Harold M. Sammons at the St. Joseph Hospital in Ottumwa. He grew up south of town on the Lake Road and graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1953. Donald was united in marriage to Mabel Anderson on July 3, 1955. They were married for sixty-five years

Donald farmed for 61 years and loved working the soil with Mabel as his full-time farming partner. While farming he also worked at Acme Brass Foundry, John Morrell Packing Plant, and John Deere Ottumwa Works. He also drove a semi for John Morrell, Budweiser Distributing Company, and Home Oil, Inc. He was an Iowa Master Soybean Grower in 1973 and a Master Corn Grower in 1976. He grew seed corn and seed beans for Pioneer for many years. He was an avid gardener and was known for his delicious sweet corn. He was a meticulous farmer and landscaper and always kept the home farm, across from Memorial Lawn Cemetery, mowed perfectly.

After semi-retiring from farming in 2001, he loved driving a touring bus for Ottumwa Coaches for 13 years. To this day, people still remember him as their driver. Donald and Mabel spent several winters in Mission, Texas and Hawaii. For 51 years they played cards every month with the same six couples – the Card Party. They enjoyed motorcycling, camping, and snowmobiling. They fully retired and sold the farm in 2016 and moved into a twin home in the Good Samaritan Society complex.

He was a lifelong member of Bethany Baptist Church where he was a moderator, deacon, elder, and trustee. He was a charter member of the Poppin’ Johnnies Two Cylinder Club, serving as chairman of Two Cylinder Days. He enjoyed tractor pulls and won many trophies in his day. He had a passion for restoring antique machinery and a love of landscaping their farm.

He is survived by his wife, Mabel; a daughter, Nadina Hofts of Des Moines; five grandchildren: Levi Hofts of Alexandria, VA, Elliott Hofts of San Diego, CA, Frederick Hofts of Des Moines, Kyle Sammons (Carleigh) of Ottumwa, Kelly Sammons of Tiffin; one great-grandson, Kole Sammons; and a sister, Marilyn Smith of Quincy, IL.
He was preceded in death by a son, Kevin; a brother, Jerry; and his parents.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, November 18, 2020 at Sinnott Funeral Home in Ottumwa with Pastor Jeremy Skinner officiating. Interment will follow in Memorial Lawn Cemetery, in Garden of Good Shepherd in Ottumwa.
