Obituary

Carol Joyce Pence, age 85, of Albia, formerly of Bloomfield, passed away on Thursday evening, September 17, 2020 at the Monroe County Hospital, under the care of EveryStep Hospice.  She was born on July 18, 1935 in Bloomfield to Levi and Ruth (Christy) Chadwick.

Joyce was a 1953 graduate of Bloomfield High School.   She married Doran Wayne Pence on April 10, 1954 at the Bloomfield Christian Church, and they were blessed with two sons, Loren and Chad.

She worked for Audie Redmond of Watts Insurance Agency for thirty years, and also was the Davis County Deputy Treasurer until her retirement in 1998.  She was a lifelong member of the Bloomfield Christian Church.  She enjoyed traveling, attending the 11th Armored Calvary reunions, attending the Pence - Henkenius - Rupe Fourth of July Celebrations, and especially enjoyed attending her children and grandchildren’s activities.  She had a passion for quilting, antiquing, cooking, baking, and was famous for her brown sack apple pie.

Joyce was a member of various organizations, including T.T.T. Society of Bloomfield, Disciples Women’s Fellowship Quilters of the Bloomfield Christian Church, Davis County Mothers Club, Davis County Fine Arts Council, Albia Crazy Quilters, and Veterans Peace Quilters.

Joyce and Doran hosted many family reunions.  One memorable gathering was when they fed 106 family members celebrating Grandpa and Grandma Chadwick’s 66th wedding anniversary at the family farm.

Joyce will be remembered as a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and her most cherished moments were those spent with her family and friends.

She is survived by her children, Loren (Salli) Pence of Albia, Chad (Crissy) Pence of Kalona; grandchildren, Jackson, Grace, Carson, Ava, Taylor, and Raegan; sister, Joann Hunter of Seymour; brother-in-law, Dick Dunlavy of Texas; sisters-in-law, Sheryl (Ken) Davis of Oskaloosa, and Laneta Chadwick of St. Louis.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Levi and Ruth Chadwick; husband, Doran Pence; siblings, Martin (Sybil) Chadwick, Doris (Harvey) Spurgeon, Carl Chadwick, MaryLee (Dillon) Lyons, Alice (Wes) Harder, Bob (Peggy) Chadwick, John Chadwick, Jean (Harry) Koehler, Judy and Jeanette Chadwick; sister-in-law, Donna Dunlavy, and brother-in-law, Dennis (Debbie) Pence.

Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, September 23, 2020 at the Bloomfield Christian Church with Reverend Leslie Dotson officiating.  Interment will follow in I.O.O.F Cemetery.  Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 22, 2020, opening to the public at 2:00 p.m., and Joyce’s family will be present from 6-8 p.m., Tuesday evening at Sinnott Funeral Home in Albia.  There will also be a visitation on Wednesday from 11:00 a.m. until service time at 1:00 p.m., at the Bloomfield Christian Church. According to the rules put in place by the Iowa Department of Public Health, proper social distancing and reasonable personal protective equipment is advised for attending a religious public event. Mask are recommended to attend the visitation and services.   In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Bloomfield Christian Church or the I.O.O.F Cemetery Foundation.  Online condolences may be left for Joyce’s family at sinnottfuneralhome.com.
