Life Story for Candelaria Santos Curiel

Candelaria Santos Curiel, age 79, of Albia, passed away on Saturday, August, 3, 2019 at her residence under the care of Care Initiatives Hospice. She was born on February 2, 1940 to Mateo and Rosa Maria Santos in San Luis Putosi, Mexico.

Candelaria married Ramiro Curiel on December 22, 1968, and they were blessed with three children: Rosa Maria Curiel, Ramiro Santos Curiel, and Alejandro Santos Curiel. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Albia. She also was a member of the tertiary order of Saint Francis. Her faith was of utmost importance, and she instilled this tradition within her family. Alejandro fibbed about going to mass once, and his punishment was to go to daily mass at 7:00 a.m. for a month. When going out of town for business or pleasure; the first thing she sought was the nearest church and prayed before the Blessed Sacrament before proceeding with any other activity. She always taught her family to seek Church first before business or vacation. She had a great devotion to our lady of Mt. Carmel and devotion to the brown scapular. As a penance she did not eat meat on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays and she frequented the sacrament of penance often. Growing up we thought there were 17 holy days of obligation, on top of Sunday Mass. In reality there are only 5 holy days of obligation.

Survivors include, children, Ramiro Santos Curiel, and Alejandro Santos (Melissa) Curiel; sisters, Maria de Jesus, and Maria Luisa, twelve grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mateo and Rosa Maria Santos; husband, Ramiro Curiel; daughter, Rosa Maria Curiel; and sisters, Maria del Refugio, and Maria de la Luz.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, August 9, 2019 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Albia with Father Mark Yates C.PP.S. officiating. Interment will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Albia. Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 8, 2019, opening to the public at 1:00 p.m., and Candelaria’s family will be present to greet friends from 6-8 p.m., at Sinnott Funeral Home in Albia. A rosary will be conducted by St. Mary’s Altar and Rosary at 4:00 p.m., and a Christian Wake Service held at 6:30 pm. Memorials may be directed to St. Mary’s Altar and Rosary.
